Event list updated June 12, 2017; due to rainy weather, there have been minor changes to the program.

This year Helsinki Day falls on a Monday, but in honor of Finland's 100th anniversary celebrations, the capital's celebration day expands into a two-day event with an abundance of activities. Already on Sunday, June 11, 2017, the city has plenty to do for all ages. This is indeed excellent news, since Helsinki Day's program offering has been so extensive in previous years that it has simply been impossible to attend all the interesting events in a single day. There are many events aimed at children or otherwise child-friendly. This listing clearly presents event highlights suitable for children of preschool age and younger on both days, but it's definitely worth getting acquainted with the program for the days as a whole here. Small Helsinki's page has also compiled four different themed program packages for celebrating Helsinki Day.

SUNDAY JUNE 11, 2017

Puotila park flea market in summer 2016.
On Sunday, we get an early start to Helsinki Day. Child-friendly events are held throughout the city. Children will take over City Hall on Sunday, the Technology Museum offers diverse programs, and a theater tent has been set up in the museum courtyard. A park picnic is held in Punavuori at Koffi Park. At the Children's Traffic City, kids can zoom around to the rhythm of music, and those interested in science get a chance to gaze at the sky when Kaivopuisto Observatory opens its doors.

In East Helsinki, a large park flea market is held at Puotila Manor and a fishing competition at Vuosaari Harbor’s noise barrier. In the west, Haaga Square bustles with activity, featuring street chalk drawing and soap bubbles among other things.

MONDAY JUNE 12, 2017

The actual Helsinki Day on June 12, 2017 should start with eating cake at Senate Square in festive celebration accompanied by the Guard Band. After the opening of the celebration day, there's a program for every taste; here are four different ways to spend the day.

Action and Fun from Morning to Evening

Fire stations' open doors continue all day and are sure to appeal to small and curious visitors. For lunch, you can head to one of Helsinki's many playgrounds and celebrate the 75th summer of playground dining. Herttoniemi Manor Park's Helsinki Day has always been a wonderful event with farm animals within petting distance. From Hertsi you can conveniently reach even by bus 50 or 59 to Children's Street Party in Puu-Vallila, where the afternoon passes with music, various performances, and disco. From the third annual street party, you can still pop by to the circus fun in Suvilahti or Konepaja Bruno's family concert.

A Quieter Helsinki Day

For those who prefer a quieter program, a visit to the Päivälehti Museum's "Five Wonderful Treasures" exhibition or Erottaja Fire Museum is a wonderful experience. Lunch at Sepa Playground and then heading to Annantalo, where programs are held for all ages throughout the day, but especially smaller children and babies are considered in the program. Sinebrychoff's brewery horses can be visited at the corner of Fabianinkatu and Etelä-Esplanad from 12–4 pm. At Rikhard Street Library's summer courtyard you can relax and read in the shade of green plants or take a nap in a hammock. In the evening, Riku's summer courtyard is taken over by urban dances. From the library you can head to admire giant soap bubbles at Esplanade Park, where Ruffle Army performs. On the North Esplanade you can head to dinner under Helsinki's roofs starting at 7 pm. The event is unique in atmosphere. Tickets for dinner were distributed earlier, but the event is worth experiencing from both the audience and passerby perspective.

Active Helsinki Day

The day begins with playhouse fun at Jakomäki Playground at 10 am. Football Day at Bolliks Field is moved indoors due to rain to the HS-Arena dome hall and invites people of all ages to play and practice. A fishing competition is held at Siltavuoren Beach in Hakaniemi in the afternoon. In the evening, Jakomäki calls again when the outdoor sports event takes over Jakomäki Sports Park from 5–7 pm.

Animal-Themed Helsinki Day

Herttoniemi's lovely manor park is taken over by the "In the Countryside in the City" event and farm animals that you can pet at close range. Hara Island also builds Helsinki Day around nature and animal themes. Sinebrychoff's brewery horses bring a hint of past atmosphere right to the city center at the corner of Fabianinkatu and Etelä-Esplanad. Children get free admission to Merimaailma Sealife on Sunday and Monday.
