Looking for the best playground in Helsinki? Helsinki has renovated or opened several completely new playgrounds, and Pienten Helsinki presents them as part of our playground article series. This time, on a virtual playground tour, we visit the playgrounds at Mellunmäki, Hilleri, Trumpetti, Iso-Antinmäki (coming soon), and the Kruunuvuorenranta play area. This article was published in 2023.
Welcome to explore new dimensions of play – I promise this article will inspire you to visit playgrounds!
Mellunmäki Playground
Mellunmäki Playground is located at Pyhätunturintie 2. It is approximately 900 meters from Mellunmäki metro station to the playground. Trunk line 560 stops (Mellunmäentie H4360 and H4361) are near the playground.
The renovated Mellunmäki Playground was quite a wonderful surprise, and the playground immediately made it onto Pienten Helsinki's Top-5 playground list in Helsinki on the first visit!
The playground has been renovated with mostly wooden play equipment from Kompan, like many other newly renovated playgrounds and play areas. As a special feature, Mellunmäki Playground has an owl that serves as both a climbing structure and a slide – something that has previously been seen in new Kompan playgrounds abroad. The owl is definitely the playground's main attraction and an impressive one at that, and it seems to be popular with children. We've already nicknamed it the owl playground!
As part of the Mellunmäki Playground renovation, the playground building itself was also renovated, and it and the rest of the courtyard were completed in the fall of 2023.

Hilleri Playground
Hilleri Playground is located at Hillerikuja 6. It is approximately 750 meters from Siilitie metro station to the playground.
Hilleri Playground on Siilitie underwent a courtyard renovation in early 2023. The old courtyard area had been in need of renovation for years, and the newly renovated courtyard area is quite successful and respectful of the original design.
The upper courtyard of Hilleri Playground has smaller versions of play elements familiar from Vennyn Park: the hillside is covered with a rubber chip surface, creating good conditions for climbing and the playground's slide. In this area there is also the playground's water element, a water meter, which was not in use at the time of our visit.
Like many other newly renovated Helsinki playgrounds and play areas, Hilleri Playground also features mostly wooden play equipment from Kompan. The courtyard is also divided into sections, and at least one area is fenced. What distinguishes this playground from others is its layered design and connection to nature – here too, children of various ages have been considered.
The best aspects of Hilleri Playground are its forest-like design built around a garden theme, with spaces divided for different activities.

Trumpetti Playground
Trumpetti Playground is located in Kannelmäki at Trumpettikuja 5.
The courtyard of Trumpetti Playground in Kannelmäki still gleams with newness at the time of our visit. Despite its name, Trumpetti Playground's courtyard is not built around a musical instrument theme, but rather farm animals adventure here. Animal tracks on the playground gates lead to wooden horses, pigs, cows, and sheep where children can climb, swing, slide down slides, and experience an exciting zip line. The play area at Trumpetti Playground is fenced, and there is no separate area for younger children.
The renovation of Trumpetti's courtyard features wooden play equipment from Lappset, familiar from previously renovated playgrounds, mostly in brown tones, with color added to the playground through paintings on the asphalt.

Kruunuvuorenranta Play Area
Kruunuvuorenranta Sports Park play area is located at Koirasaarentie 31 (behind the daycare).
Kruunuvuorenranta, a new neighborhood being built in Laajasalo, has a new small play area that opened to children in late 2022. Kruunuvuorenranta's first play area is part of a sports park currently under construction in the area, which already includes a play area, artificial turf field, and skateboard and skate park called SKUUM! Other parts of the sports park are scheduled to be completed during 2023.
Kruunuvuorenranta Play Area is not the largest, but all the more charming. It has elements that I haven't seen in other Helsinki play areas. The play area is fenced and suits children of different ages well.
